Transformer Tank Sandblasting Process

The sandblasting process removes rust, oxide layers, oil, dirt, and other foreign matter from the transformer tank and metal surfaces to ensure the surface reaches the appropriate roughness and cleanliness before painting. This process ensures maximum adhesion of the paint system to the surface and ensures long-lasting corrosion resistance.

Process Steps:

Preparation:

Before sandblasting, the transformer tank surfaces are degreased.
They must be free of welding burrs, grease, or oil residue.
Any paint, putty, or coating on the tank surface is pre-cleaned.

Equipment and Materials Used:

A sandblasting booth or sandblasting room is used.
Steel grit, steel shot, or alumina are generally preferred abrasives.
A compressed air system, a filtered mask, and appropriate ventilation equipment must be available.

Sandblasting Process:

Sandblasting is performed using compressed air.
The surface is treated homogeneously; no shadows or untreated areas should remain.
Throughout the blasting process, the operator adheres to the Sa 2.5 surface cleanliness standard (ISO 8501-1).
Surface roughness (Ra) should generally be between 40 and 75 microns (varies depending on the paint system).

Inspection and Cleaning:

After blasting, the surface should be free of dust, oil, or moisture.
If necessary, the surface should be cleaned with oil-free compressed air or a dry brush.
The surface should not be left exposed for more than 4 hours; otherwise, there is a risk of re-rusting.

Surface Inspection:

The level of cleanliness is visually inspected according to the ISO 8501-1 standard.
Roughness is measured with a profile measuring device.
Humidity, temperature, and dew point difference must be appropriate (the steel surface temperature must be at least 3°C higher than the dew point).

Primer Application:

After sandblasting, primer should be applied within a maximum of four hours before the surface begins to rust.
If this delay occurs, re-sandblasting may be necessary.
