Transformer Tank Dome Manufacturing Process

The transformer tank storage dome is a key component that forms the upper section of the expansion tank and compensates for the oil volume changes that occur as the transformer heats up. High sealing, form precision, and durability are key criteria for the manufacturing process.

1. Design and Technical Preparation

The manufacturing process begins with the customer's specifications for the expansion tank volume, connection type, and installation dimensions.

The dome geometry, sheet metal thickness, and the location of the connecting flanges are designed in 3D in a CAD environment.

During the design phase, the air vent port, oil level indicator, and connection ports are also positioned.

2. Material Selection and Preparation

S235JR grade steel sheet is generally used in dome production.

The material thickness (usually between 4 and 8 mm) is determined according to the project.

The sheet metal is cut into circular or segmented shapes using CNC plasma or laser cutting machines.

3. Shaping (Pressing and Dish Process)

The dome is formed using special molds on hydraulic dome presses.

This process ensures that the dome is perfectly circular and of uniform thickness.

When necessary, segmented parts are assembled using a dry fit before welding.

4. Welding and Joining

The formed parts are joined using MIG/MAG or TIG methods by certified welding operators.

After welding, the seams are ground, the surface is smoothed, and the welded areas are checked with penetrant tests.

Accessory parts such as connecting flanges, air intake pipes, and level gauge connections are welded onto the dome.

5. Leakage and Pressure Testing

The completed dome is subjected to a leakage test under air pressure (usually 1 bar).

If even the smallest leak is detected in the welded seams, the necessary repairs are made, and the test is repeated.

6. Surface Cleaning and Painting

The dome surface is sandblasted (to SA 2.5 standard).

Then, an industrial primer and a top coat of paint are applied to protect against rust and external factors.

The paint color is generally the same RAL tone as the transformer body (e.g., RAL 7032 or RAL 7033).

7. Quality Control and Shipping

Dimensional, form, and welding checks are performed throughout the production process.

Products that successfully pass the final tests are packaged in protective packaging to prevent scratches or impacts and are ready for shipment.
